This tax season was much more challenging then others in the past. The last five years I’ve had one steady full time job, putting in about fifty hours a week. When it came to tax season in the past it had been just one source of income to report. It was cut and dry after the first year, my accountant gave me instructions on what I could and could not deduct.

This year was much different getting laid off in the middle of the year. When the lay offs went out my coworkers and I were devastated. I developed a business plan and got the proper licensing with a loan and went into business for myself. I did that for the rest of the year. Being self-employed was a whole new ball game to me. The different things a business could write off for taxes was a lot more confusing and vast then working for someone else. I had not been properly prepared for taxes as I had been in the past. Mainly because I had been so focused on finding employment and developing strategies that I had not contacted my accountant for a meeting. There were many more things that I could have written off on the business, but did not keep the receipts or have proper journals. I also won some prizes form the Lockerz site that had to be accounted for.

I have a better understanding for next years tax season but there is still much more I can do. I will end up paying my accountant more this year then I have in the past but he is also an expense.
