Different Uses for Sewage Pumps

You may need to install a sewage pump if you are planning on putting in a new bathroom in your basement. The power of gravity is the way that your toilets in the street level and the upper levels of your house use to send the liquids and solids from the toilet through your sewer lines to your septic tank or to your city sewer system. So if your basement floor is below the level of the main sewer lines you will have to have something that will pump the waste up to the sewer lines and to do this you will need to have a sewage pump.

The main purpose of using a sewage pump is to move the liquids and solids up to the higher levels which are about 8 to 10 feet so they can be disposed of properly through the sewage lines. Usually the sewage pump sits in a sewage basin which should be the lowest area in your basement near where you plan on having your bathroom. Most of these pumps are capable of handling the solids that are up to 2 inches wide. Some commercial high pressure pumps out there may be able to handle larger solids.

Most of the sewage pumps work with a flotation device that detects the liquid or solids when they get to a certain height inside the sewage basin. This will then turn on the pump so that the wastes will automatically pump out whenever that certain level is reached. You do need to always be alert to noticing if after so many flushes from the toilet that if you don’t hear the pump pumping out the wastes you may need to check it to be sure it is working correctly. If it is not working correctly you may have an overflow if you were to use the shower in your basement bathroom or flush the toilet too many times when it hasn’t been pumped out.

If you have a gray water tank that you collect water from your washing machine or your bathtubs and sinks (not from toilets) you may also be able to use a sewage pump that is immersible that you can put into the tank so that it will then pump this water out so that you can use it for watering your lawn and flowers. This is very useful during times of drought so that you don’t have to use city water or water from your own well. So as you can see sewage pumps can be very useful in different situations.
